First Class Newsletter Issue 1/2005
Happy New Year to you all!! Another year starts; and we hope that it will be a productive one. There are some exciting developments planned for First Class during this year, the principal one being the upgrade to SQL Server. An announcement will be made when this new version is available. This will preclude the necessity for First Class Web users to synchronize the First Class database with SQL, and will reduce the generation time of roll data for A+ users.
Implications for First Class are that we have re-written some of the program, which will make it easier to use. Some of the main changes and benefits are...
SQL will allow multiple timetables in the one database, so there is no need for multiple databases. Each timetable will have a date range, and because of this...
Extras will work better as there will be no need to import extras history.
The Blocking grid will feed directly into the timetable blocks, so grid items will disappear.
Allocation and block maintenance have been combined into one easier to use window.
Instances of classes can be edited without creating daughter blocks, removing daughter blocks as an entity.
A class in a block can be placed in a different day/period slot from the rest of the block.
No need to have seperate access and SQLServer databases. This was causing a lot of confusion.
Greater stability and speed, no more corupt databases.
Greater security.
In the meantime, release 650 of the current version of First Class and First Class Web will be released shortly. Look out for the official announcement.
First Class Hints and Tips
This is the time of the year when students like to make extra work for year co-ordinators (as if they didn't have enough to do already), and make changes to their courses. Also, new students may appear and need to be slotted into blocked classes.
How do I change a student's choices?
| 1. |
From the "Tools" menu, select "Enrol students".
| 2. |
Get into "edit" mode.
| 3. |
Click the "Find Student" button.
| You can confine the search
by selecting the appropriate year level from the "Yearlevel" field,
and by typing the first few characters of either the first or last
name of the student in the "Student Name" field. |
| 4. |
Select the student either by clicking on their name and clicking "OK", or by double-clicking on the name.
| 5. |
Click on the (new) subjects the student is studying and click "Apply".
