  How Do I?

How do I make the tick boxes in the class list printout look like a grid?

The new options for printing class lists using version 351 of First Class now allow you to print tick-boxes next to students' names. If you want this to look more like a grid you need to...

Set the number of boxes you want by either clicking on the drop-arrow and selecting a number under TICK BOXES, or, with the field highlighted, typing in the number of boxes you want
Set an appropriate WIDTH and HEIGHT in pixels. Please note that the HEiGHT must be set at 5 or more pixels.
Set the GAP X and GAP Y at 0
PREVIEW and PRINT the report

When I transfer my data via CD I get a Read Only message. How can I fix this?

Timetablers from some schools have been reporting that after transferring data from one computer to another they receive the following message when they try to open the database on the second computer:

"Cannot update. Database or object is Read Only"

This happens when data is transferred using a CD and occurs because any file that is transferred to a (non-rewritable) CD is changed to Read Only. Unfortunately, when it is copied back onto a computer, the Read Only attribute sticks.

To get around this...

Open WINDOWS EXPLORER
Locate the First Class data folder, and the file you are attempting to open
Right-click on the file and select PROPERTIES from the drop down menu
Locate the READ ONLY attribute and uncheck the box

You should now be able to open the database in First Class.

Most of us would be aware of the bushfires currently burning in south eastern Australia as they have featured prominently in the media. Some of our readers may have been unfortunate enough to have experienced them first hand. The extent of the problem is immediately obvious from satellite images on the Earth Observatory website.

The Natural Hazards icon on the site’s home page will take you to a map of the world that has various symbols indicating where natural hazards are currently occurring. If you click on the symbol for bushfires in Australia you will be taken to a satellite image showing the extent of the bushfires and the smoke rising from them.

Other items of interest include the Experiments section of the website which contains "interactive experiments that can be used to teach all ages about the art and science of space-based Remote Sensing." Remote Sensing is used by NASA to study how and why the earth changes.

The Blue Marble is a spectacular view of the earth that has been compiled from surface observations collected from June to October 2001. There is a detailed explanation of the data used to make up this image and how it was collected, as well as an animated image of the earth turning.

As you can imagine, these are only a few features of this fascinating site. There is also a Resources section containing many useful links, a Newsroom and information about current missions. If you and/or your students have an interest in how our earth is changing spend some time browsing the site. You will be fascinated by what you learn!

"What a grand thing to be loved; what a grander thing still to love. The heart becomes heroic through passion. It is no longer composed of anything but what is pure; it no longer rests upon anything but what is elevated and great." Victor Hugo, Playwright in Les Miserables
