  Did You Know?

You can use the new "Extra Class" function in Extras to release teachers in blocks for in lieus where not all forms in the block are on a camp or excursion.

To do this:

Set up the camp/excursion as usual, for just the forms and teachers involved
Set up additional made up camp(s)/excursion(s) using the other forms in the blocks, only for the period(s) in the blocks that are running. Do not include any teachers in the additional camp(s)/excursion(s).

An example of this might be that 7C, 7D & 7E are going on an excursion. In periods 3 & 5 on the day of the excursion there are blocks involving all year 7 classes (A-E).

The first step is to set up the excursion for 7C, 7D & 7E as usual. The next step is to set up an additional made up excursion for period 3 and an additional made up excursion for period 5, both involving only 7A & 7B and no teachers. This will make all the teachers in the blocks available for in lieus.
Click GENERATE EXTRAS

Now we need to recreate the classes in the blocks that are running.

Decide which classes in the blocks are going to be run for the students not attending the excursion. You will need to "collapse" the other classes into these.

In the above example we said that there were blocks in periods 3 & 5 involving all Year 7s. These blocks would be for subjects that students from more than one form group attend. As some of the form groups are away on the excursion, there will be a smaller group of students attending each class. Rather than running all classes in the block, and possibly needing to cover the teachers that have gone on the excursion, you can combine some of the classes.
Click the EXTRA CLASSES button
Click ADD at the bottom of the screen and set up EXTRA CLASSES corresponding to the above classes. For these extra classes you will just need to define a name (perhaps the block name), the subject(s) and the period(s).
Make sure you have the right day selected!
After defining each class click APPLY. After defining the last class, click OK. The classes will appear on the left.

At this stage all of the teachers in the blocks are still available for in lieus. The next step will use some of these teachers to cover the "collapsed" classes.
Click on the TEACHER button (located under the EXTRA CLASSES button) and cover these classes with their usual teacher. This will be automatically detected as IN LIEUS.
As the other teachers in these blocks are still free (because all the forms in the block were on this combination of excursions) they can take in lieus for the lost classes.

Kids spend a lot of time surfing the internet and chatting online. After all, the internet is a source of entertainment as much as it is an educational tool.

With the school holidays upon us, kids are probably going to spend more time than usual online. The Cybersmart Kids site is produced by the Australian Broadcasting authority and has useful tips for kids, teachers and parents to help protect them from the potential risks associated with surfing the worldwide web.

There is a handy list of Cybersmart Rules that can be printed and kept near the computer so that kids can refer to them as necessary. Once kids have read the rules ask them to take the Cybersmart Quiz. It will really help to reinforce each rule.

The links to Kids Coolsites are great and worth bookmarking. They range from fun entertainment and activity sites to help sites for homework and school projects. There are also links to sites that provide advice and assistance for their health and wellbeing.

The tips and links in the Cybersmart Parents section will help to make you aware of the risks faced by kids using the internet and give advice about how you can minimise these risks.

Safe and happy surfing!
