News on "First Class" and "Outcomes" in China

The training and implementation in First Class and Outcomes at the International School of Beijing - (ISB) was very successful, as was the First Class training at the Yew Chung International School. The Middle School timetable will now run smoothly, and the Elementary School are very excited about being able to enter their timetable into First Class. The attendees from both the Beijing and Shanghai campuses of the Yew Chung Schools now have a good understanding of First Class and will be able to easily complete the timetables at their respective schools.

The Beijing expedition included the installation and set up of OUTCOMES, Human Edge’s new student assessment, reporting and analysis program in the middle school at ISB. This part of the school represents over 500 students, 72 teachers and 181 classes. First Class data is imported directly into the Outcomes Administrator module to avoid duplication of data entry tasks. Reporting periods, assessment areas, marking schemes and templates where set up according to the school’s individual needs. Teachers are now able to access their own classes and subjects for marking via a web interface at any time. All staff have have already begun marking their Interim Reports. The Yew Chung schools are also very interested in adopting Outcomes as their student reporting software. The interface from First Class brings a powerful combination of software together to streamline school operations.

Product Development

Our First Class product development is still progressing at a nice speed. As well as "behind the scene improvements", new features that will be available for electronic roll marking in the next version are -
  • An "Active for Roll" field in Year Level Maintenance to block certain year levels in the school (eg P/K-6 in a P/K-12 school), and in Period Maintenance to allow you to determine which periods are to be roll marked.
  • Reports will use the Year Level for Rollover for the breakdown of years, instead of the Year Level (Blocking). This means that, if you have combined year levels for the purpose of Blocking, the year levels will be split for the reports.
  • For Victorian schools the two types of CASES reports can now be accessed from the one screen. You can specify whether you wish to use the AM/PM summation, or individual periods for roll marking, and whether you want the day-by-day absence report (formerly called the "Cases Significant Absence Report"), or a summary report (formerly called the "Cases Absence Summary Report").
  • The "Roll Edit" screen will have a "Mark All", with a reason selector, allowing you to mark all students in the selected class, or all periods for the selected student to be marked with the same reason. You will also be able to update the roll over a data range making the maintenance of this information significantly quicker! Rather than needing to update every period separately with the same reason, you will be able to apply a Reason or an explanation to a range of periods for a student.
  • If you have any suggestions after looking at the software upon release please let us know.
  • The class drop-down list in "Roll Edit" in A+ will sort by "Explanation Letter". This will allow you to sort by students whose parents have explained an absence.
