Term 4 is a good time to install Electronic Roll Marking
In readiness for full deployment in 2006, the last quarter of 2005 sees many schools piloting the A+ Electronic Roll Marking (ERM) module of First Class.
For more information on Electronic Roll Marking, call Gary Stoneham on 03 9690 5044 or 0438 188 132 and/or see the following page on our website:

This section of the newsletter highlights selected items from the next release of First Class. Some of these have been mentioned in previous Newsletters, but are worth mentioning again. This release is a major one and will be available shortly.
| A+ Reports |
Work is almost complete on the reports section of A+. We anticipate there will be a new release this week.
|
|
There is a new “Unmarked Classes” report that will allow you to determine whether all classes have been marked. |
|
The two Cases reports are now printed from the one selection screen, with radio buttons indicating which one you wish to print.
|
|
Year Level for Rollover is now used for reports as Year Level may have some years combined.
|
| First Class |
The “Frees” column in the “Available Teachers” screen has been changed to more accurately reflect the number of free periods the teacher has, decrementing as extras are given. Cancelled classes, such as camps and excursions, will increment the number. |
| A+ |
When editing rolls by student, “unmarked” no longer automatically changes to “Present” when “Edit” is clicked. When editing rolls by class it is now possible to suppress the automatic change from "unmarked" to "Present" by holding down the <Ctrl> key when clicking “Edit”.
|
| The “Explanation Letter” has been added. You can now create a letter to send to parents/guardians asking for an explanation for unapproved absences. |

The timetable generator in First Class makes an assessment of your timetable data before it starts generating. There are a number of indicators that show that your timetable data, as it stands, will be very difficult to complete, or even impossible.
- Insufficient Periods: This screen will appear if you have any combination of mutually exclusive classes that require more than the number of periods you have in a cycle. The solutions to this vary. It may be as simple as removing a few rooms from some allocations, or temporarily deleting any clashes. Sometimes, however, more complex solutions may be required if neither of the above work. A matrix of commonalities can be produced that indicate which items are causing the difficulty.
- Same Day Precheck Problems: This screen appears if a combination of a number of allocations means that a particular allocation cannot be allocated to separate days. In this case, if it is OK to place the class twice in one day, just click OK. Otherwise, you have the option to locate the problem and fix it before proceeding with the generation.
- Mutually Exclusive Events: This problem occurs when two or more allocations are stopping each other from being placed on the timetable. It is indicated by there being two or more allocations in the “Most Difficult Allocations” pane in the "Iterative Analysis" screen with much higher rates of exclusion from the timetable than other allocations during iterations. The solution here depends on the allocations involved. You may need to check a teacher or form allocations table, you may need to check “Block Maintenance” or, you may need to go to the timetables involved.
