Most of us would be familiar with software licensing concepts and the general rules regarding copyrighted and intellectual material. By purchasing a software license a purchaser is allowed to use the software subject to certain conditions. The important points to note here are that the purchaser does not actually own the software and that the license is granted subject to certain conditions.
Owning the software is not an issue as you can generally use it for a lifetime, however you are not permitted to sell, modify or in any other way interfere with it. There are usually a number of conditions for use of the software and these can be found with the software license agreement attached to the software or displayed on installation.
One important condition is the restriction on installation and use. For example, a SINGLE USER license for SAS2000 (and most other software products), allows you to install and use the software on ONE COMPUTER only. This does not mean that you can install the software on several computers but only use one at a time. To do so is an infringement of the software license and is generally termed software piracy.
At Human Edge we understand that many schools have several members of staff who require access to the same software, so we offer MULTI USER licenses for our products. A multi user SAS2000 license is a unique and fantastic value for money option as you can install the software on as many computers at the one campus as you like, including one computer “at home”. We believe that no other software supplier in the administration area offers this freedom and financial advantage that represents a saving of thousands of dollars to a school. Using the security options, a school can exactly tailor the software to suit individual groups. This means that only the data and functions that are required by any individual are presented to them.
Our licensing program works on a basic honesty system. We have chosen to operate it this way as we expect that schools would abide by the rules (both moral and legal) and also set an example for children to follow. Software piracy directly affects the ability for companies to continue to provide the products and services that users continue to demand and expect, and has a much greater negative impact for smaller companies such as ourselves.
We offer several different licensing options for each of our products so we understand that some schools may be a bit confused about exactly what their licensing agreement entitles them to. If you have any doubts or questions about your licensing agreement please contact us and we will happily work through the issues with you at no obligation.
We would like to take this opportunity to recognise and thank the vast majority of schools that do play the game correctly and set the best example.
Use the timetable generator to determine a part-time staff member’s day off?
Under normal circumstances you would make a part-time staff member unavailable on a particular day of the week, so that classes taught by them cannot be timetabled at that time.
However, in some cases the staff member's availability may be more flexible and the day off may change from week to week. In this situation you can use the following method to let First Class determine the day off for you.
Firstly, you need to define a new subject to act as the staff member's unavailable times. For this example we will call the subject Off.
 |
From the MAINTENANCE menu, select SUBJECT>EDIT
| |
 |
Get into EDIT MODE and click ADD
| |
 |
Define the subject as Off
| |
 |
Click SAVE
| |
The next step is to create the allocation. Please note that this allocation can only be used for full days (i.e. starting at period 1 and ending at the last period for the day).
 |
From the MAINTENANCE menu, select ALLOCATIONS
| |
 |
Click on the TEACHER radio button, and FILTER for the part-time teacher
| |
 |
Get into EDIT MODE and click on the ADD button
| |
 |
Define Off as the subject and leave the form and room fields blank
| |
 |
Click on the CONTEXT button at the end of the PERIOD DETAILS field
| |
 |
In the field next to the MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVES, enter the number of days the staff member has off in a week
| |
A similar method can be used for half days off, but it is a little more complicated as it also requires manipulation of "Period no starts". This method will be explained in next week's newsletter.
Get rid of the text under the toolbar icons?
In order to give yourself a little more room on the screen, once you are familiar with the toolbar icons and their functions, you may like to get rid of the text underneath each one.
This is an easy process, simply:
 |
Go to the TOOLS menu and select CONFIGURATION
| |
 |
Uncheck the SHOW TEXT ON TOOLBARS checkbox
| |
Note that there are other useful items in this window. You can include a school logo on printouts and print a date and term on all timetables!
Another date has been scheduled for the First Class introductory course:
 |
Introduction to First Class |
Wednesday 27 March 2002
|
This course provides a great overview of the software as well as tips for using shortcuts and other useful features. The cost of the course is $195, which includes a light lunch and a copy of the First Class manual for you to keep.
The course commences at 9.00am and concludes at approximately 4.00 pm. As our training courses are a forum for you to have your questions about the software dealt with, we remain flexible about the finishing time. Our instructors want to make sure that you get as much as possible out of your day and part of this is ensuring that we spend as much time as necessary answering your queries!
