Greetings!!
Just a short note on my trip to China...
After a 9½-hour flight to Shanghai on the Friday I was greeted at the Airport by James Fielding, the Co-Principal of the Yew Chung International School in Shanghai, and his wife Dianne. My first impression of the city, what I could see of it at night, was that much of the central part has been modernized, and that neon signs and billboards abound.
Saturday late morning and early afternoon was spent at a Parents Association picnic for the end of the school year. It was probably the biggest gathering of ex-pats I saw the whole time I was there. It was a fun afternoon and the Radisson Hotel, whose grounds were made available for the day and who provided the food, put on a good show. On Saturday night we went to a restaurant near to my lodgings. Some of the food was strange by western standards, but you could see where some of the so-called “Chinese” food we get here comes from. The food there is not as glutinous however, and I found it much easier to digest than the “Chinese” food we get here. After this we went to the centre of the city, to “The Bund” and its surrounds. This is a fascinating area. It was handed over, by the Chinese government at the time, to foreign powers after their rebellion. Consequently, the buildings are all French/English styles. We even walked around the “French Quarter” which reminded me very much of some of the old towns along the Dordogne River. The main “Mall” is a sea of neon, with the ubiquitous “Macca’s”, “Kentucky Fried” and “Pizza Hut”. I guess if even the French can be corrupted, what hope does the rest of the world have!
Sunday was spent on a general tour of some of the sights, including going up to the top floor of the Grand Hyatt Hotel to look down on the city. This hotel occupies the 53rd to 88th floors of the Jin Mao Building, with spectacular views of the Bund, the Huang Pu River and the city. The Jin Mao Building is the third tallest building in the world. Then we took a walk around the markets and some of the more traditional Chinese areas, where the buildings are either in their original condition, or have been restored.
Monday and Tuesday were spent training staff at the Shanghai and Hong Kong schools in the use of First Class, with dinner out each night.
On Wednesday I made my own way into the centre of the city to do some sightseeing, but it rained heavily (thought I was in Sydney) so I could only go to the Museum, where I spent the next two or three hours. That night I flew back home.
It was an exhausting, but exhilarating trip, and I hope that I may go back again at some time, whether for work again, or purely pleasure, as I found the Chinese people very friendly and I don’t think I’ve felt safer anywhere than I did there.

Robert took some photographs of Shanghai during his trip and is in the process of editing them. Once this has been done we will post them on our website for everyone to see.
A hint on setting up your subjects…
Although it is tempting to set up a separate code for each subject for each year level or form, for example 7Amath, 7BENG, First Class has been set up to work best with having one generic code for each subject, eg. MATH, ENG. This also reduces the selection list when creating allocations, amending blocks etc.
If you have unique codes for each subject for each year level or form due to export issues, a future release of First Class will allow you to append the form/year level onto the subject for a student as part of the export. We will advise you as soon as this feature is available.
What are the large up and down arrows on some screens for?
You may notice large up and down arrows on some screens, mainly maintenance screens. These allow you to re-order the items on the screen for the purpose of printing. Some of the screens included are Period Maintenance, Form Maintenance and Day Maintenance. In the next version of First Class, you will also be able to re-order classes in blocks.
