  First Class Development

The next release of First Class is currently under development and will be available by the end of June.

New features in this release will include a year level rollover function, a new extras history report, the ability to order classes in a block, easier subject choice entry and much more! Additionally, when editing a class in a block, teachers and rooms will be separated into assigned and unassigned categories.

Premier licence holders will be able to import student choices and blocking details. This new feature will mean that the person responsible for timetabling will be able to give year level co-ordinators a copy of the database so they can work on preparing their student subject choices and blocking remotely. Once these tasks have been completed the results can be imported back into the main timetable database. Please note that this feature will be only accessible to users who have purchased a First Class Premier licence. New licence checking measures will be added to enforce this, and an explanation of these will be included in next week's email.

  How Do I?

How to reduce the size of your database?

As you continue to use First Class you may notice that the database size will increase. Some of this is due to the addition of data but much of it is wasted space that has been used temporarily. You can recover this space by saving the database using the FILE>SAVE AS menu. Some users have reported reducing the size of their database from 7 meg to 2 meg! This can be particularly useful when you are backing up your database or if you need to send a copy of your database via email.

How do I copy the text out of the right-hand pane of the Timetable Generator?

There are situations when it is useful to be able to copy the text from the right hand pane of the Timetable Generator. An example is if there are problem allocations when you generate the timetable. You need to know what these are so that you can make appropriate alterations before starting the generator again. Copying the text out of the right hand pane into a text editor will ensure that you have a copy to refer back to when altering your allocations.

To copy the text:

Make sure timetable generation is in progress
Click on CHANGE OPTIONS
Set a very high backtrack depth
This is so the time between iterations is high enough to allow you to do the following...
Highlight the desired text in the right-hand pane
Press CTRL C to copy the text
Open up a text editor such as Notepad
Paste the text into the text editor. You now have a hard copy of the right-hand pane of the generator.
reset the backtrack depth back to 0
stop the generation and close it without saving the changes
You can now make the alterations to the difficult allocations, either under MAINTENANCE>BLOCKS or MAINTENANCE>ALLOCATIONS, and then run the generator again.

  Website of the Week

www.whereis.com.au

This is a fantastic website for navigating around metropolitan areas and regional centres in Australia. You can use the Map Search feature to display a map showing the location of a particular street, which can be zoomed in or out, and there is also an option to show the nearest parking stations in the area.

Another very handy feature is the Directions Search. This shows you the best route to use when going from one location to another and estimates the time your journey will take you. You are able to nominate whether you wish to travel by foot or by car, with tolls or without tolls. The search will provide you with a map as well as written directions indicating the streets to take from the start of your journey until you reach your destination.

If you are looking for a hospital, park, police station or shopping complex within your suburb you can also use this site. The Place of Interest Search will provide you with a list of all results for your area and you can view maps for each. You can carry out a more refined search by using the Map Search to locate a particular street and then using the Place of Interest Search drop down menu once the map is displayed.

Where Is Online is produced by UBD and currently provides detailed maps for metropolitan areas and regional centres around Australian capital cities only. According to the website, map coverage is being updated progressively and their aim is to create the most comprehensive and complete online map database for Australia, so keep watching for maps of other regions!
