SAS2000 – Response Times
We have received a number of support calls regarding perceived slow response time in SAS2000, either when opening a screen (typically the STUDENT screen) or when moving between screens (example when moving from the STUDENT screen to the FAMILY screen).
We have identified 3 areas that could play a part in poor performance -
| 1. |
Antivirus Software
If you are running Antivirus software, either disable REALTIME scanning or exclude SAS2000 from the checking procedure.
|
| 2. |
Trojan Software
Malevolent programs, such as Spy-ware, Computer virus or Computer Worms are often installed on your Computer via a Trojan (named after the Trojan Horse of mythology). Your Antivirus software will protect and remove viruses and worms, but the Trojan and any Spy-ware will not be identified. As well as a violation of your privacy these programs can cause speed issues by taking up RAM that legitimate programs cannot access. Remove all legacy Trojans by running a Trojan Remover application – such as “ADAWARE”. |
| 3. |
Network
If you are processing SAS2000 in a multi-user environment where the SAS2000 application is resident on the network, there are a number of considerations you must take into account –
 |
Network Cards -
All Network Cards must be 100 megabit. If you have an Nforce Chipset Network card – these cards appear to automatically drop to 10 megabit. Force the card to run at 100 megabit full duplex.
|
 |
SQL Server –
If instead of SQL Server you have MSDE installed (MSDE is a cut down version of Microsoft SQL Server), and you have more than 4 users accessing SAS2000, the response speed will be slow. Install SQL Server.
|
 |
Router –
If you have a Router or Switch connecting your Computer to the Network ensure that it is running at 1 gigabit.
|
|
If after discounting the above scenarios, you still have no improvement in response time, you may wish to consider an alternative SAS2000 Network install. Install the full SAS2000 application on each workstation with the database still on the network. By running the SAS2000 application locally you will reduce the network traffic that may be contributing to the problem.
NB - This option will mean that all future SAS2000 upgrades will need to be individually installed across ALL computers that have the SAS2000 application locally installed.
If after trying all of the suggestions the response times in SAS2000 do not improve, then please ask your IT Technician to contact Max Davison on 9690 5044 for a more in depth discussion of your network and possible solutions.
