Language Background Validation

It has been brought to our attention that the Languages Background list in SAS2000 has codes that will not be validated on the CEVN website. The SAS2000 list contains all the entries from the Standard Australian Classification of Countries list, whereas the CEVN Website is validating against a smaller list. If you find that a student file passes the SAS2000 validation but fails the CEVN validation then read on.

In general, the codes that are missing relate to generic language codes whose value fields ends with "00", such a Chinese (7100), Yugoslavian (3500), Afghan (4100), Indian (5000) & Sri Lankan (5000). To pass the CEVN validation you need to choose the appropriate dialect entry rather than these entries. Below is a list of suggestions for resolving.

Codes that will fail CEVN Validation Suggested Alternatives
Chinese (7000) Cantonese (7101)
Hakka (7102)
Mandarin (7104)

Or alternatively, if the dialect is not listed then change the Chinese USERCODE value to 7199.

Yugoslavian (3500) Croatian (3503)
Bosnian (3501)
Serbian (3505)
Afghan (4100) Pashto (Afghani) (4102)
Indian (5000) Urdu (5212)
Punjabi (5207)
Sri Lankan (5000) Sinhalese (5211)
Scandinavian (1500) Danish (1501)
Norwegian (1503)
Swedish (1504)
Czechoslovakian (3600) Czech (3601)

If you have other languages that fail the CEVN validation call the support centre on 1300 301 931 to get assistance.
